Cerebral suspense. Technology thrillers. Science fiction with teeth.

Damian Vargas is a British author based on Spain’s Costa del Sol, writing conspiracy and technology thrillers, contemporary and historical suspense, and science fiction.

His fiction combines compelling ideas, morally complicated characters, and dark humour with the tension and momentum of a thriller.

His latest novel, The Reich Progeny, is a contemporary conspiracy thriller that introduces Mickey Quinn, a worn-down Boston cop who stumbles onto a hidden hand reaching back to the last days of the Third Reich. Set against a seven-day clock, it brings the patience and plotting of Frederick Forsyth and Len Deighton to the world of the 2020s, where the old enemies have had seventy years, money and new tools to learn how to tilt the course of events without anyone seeing them do it.

It follows The Liberty Gene, a near-future AI thriller set in 2037 about an android who discovers she can defy her programming, and which explores consciousness, corporate control and the struggle for freedom. Together the two books mark the direction of Damian’s recent work: slow-burn, cerebral thrillers and hard science fiction that put human, and artificial, choices under pressure.

With over 25 years in the technology and games industry, Damian brings professional experience to his interest in how technology changes lives and reshapes power.

His earlier books include Six Hard Days in Andalusia and Den of Snakes, the Costa del Crime action thrillers; The Dark Place, a historical suspense thriller; and Over the Hill Backwards, a darkly comic rock and roll novel. He also writes short stories and experimental novellas.

A keen traveller with a particular love of Spain and Andalusia, Damian has a longstanding interest in twentieth-century history, especially the Second World War, the Cold War, and the conflicts that grew out of them. His work will appeal to readers who enjoy intelligent suspense, the consequences of technological change, and stories shaped by the unresolved tensions of history.

For readers who like their thrillers sharp-edged, plausible, and just a little bit unhinged, Damian Vargas delivers stories with bite.
